December is easily the busiest month of the year for many. With parties, deadlines, gift shopping, Christmas pageants, decorating the house, holiday concerts to attend, sending out cards, and keeping up with traditions. As we attempt to check items off our to-do list, the stress piles on! By the time we reach Christmas Day, we end up feeling burned out.
A friend recently posted a quote on Facebook that read “We don’t have to continue holiday traditions that leave us broke, overwhelmed, and tired.” Boy did that strike a chord with me! This year, I decided to downsize my holiday to-do list. I’ve chosen not to mail cards out, to spend less on gifts, and take the decorating down a notch. We even decided against attending my husband’s work Christmas party! It sounds crazy and may even feel like breaking tradition, but this is honestly the most joy I have felt at this time of year. I’ve been able to devote more time to serving and creating holiday magic for my kids.
I challenge you to pinpoint whatever is stealing your joy this holiday season and let go of it. Maybe this year you turn one invitation down. Maybe you don’t stress over your house looking perfect for out of town guests. Maybe you say no when you feel your plate is already full. Even of it’s just one small thing that you get rid of, allow yourself to experience more joy this Christmas by taking on less.
